Tony Fernandes Almost Buy Queens Park Rangers
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) - AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, the closer to buy 51 percent stake in the English Premier Soccer club, Queens Park Rangers (QPR), according to some reports.
He was reported to be the owner bought the Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, a major shareholder of QPR at about $ 196 (RM583) million in the deal is likely to be announced in the near future.
Ecclestone reportedly holds 66 percent stake in the club, along with iron and steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal of India, another major shareholder with 33 percent and former head of the Renault Formula 1 team, Flavio Briatore has a one per cent.
Ecclestone is a major shareholder of the club's last five years and he has long wanted to sell it.
Wall Streets Journal on Wednesday reported that Fernandes would buy 51 percent stake in the club from Ecclestone and he said it would buy shares with Mittal, which already has a third of the ownership.
It's still not clear, although those who know about the agreement, said Fernandes will not pay 100m (RM488 million) as desired by Ecclestone.
Fernandez, fans of West Ham, has several times tried and failed to buy West Ham United football club in east London's key.
Among them was a member of Parliament for Rembau and former Vice President Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Khairy Jamaluddin, who wrote in Twitter: "Tan Sri Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, now you've got QPR, will you take home Safee Sali (national football player) to play the premier league?
Safee is now a single football player from Malaysia to play with Super League club Indonesia, Pelita Jaya.
