Indonesia lost to Malaysia in a penalty shootout on Monday in the Southeast Asian Games soccer final at Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, South Jakarta.
The teams were tied 1-1 until the extra time.Indonesia scored early in the fourth minute with a header from Gunawan Dwi Cahyo. However, Malaysia controlled the game after Omar Mohamad Asrarudin equalized in the 35th minute.
In the penalty shootout, two Indonesian players failed to score, while only one Malaysian striker failed.Malaysia previously beat Indonesia 1-0 in the qualifying round.
The Indonesian and Malaysian squads have faced off 13 times in the history of the Southeast Asian Games, ending in six victories for each country and a 0-0 tie during a qualifying match in the 1979 Games.
